Less N Leaching. Lower Emissions & More Grass with EcoN

Eco-N Every so often Agricultural Research hits the jackpot with a really significant finding. I suspect the work on N Inhibitors by Profs'. Hong Di & Keith Cameron at Lincoln University, NZ in conjunction with Ravensdown will prove to be very significant. The end product of this research is the N Inhibitor Eco-N (now a Ravensdown product for use on pasture based dairyfarms. The Eco-N is applied as a fine spray onto the soil/pasture during the autumn & again in the late winter early spring. Urine is the main source of nitrate leaching & nitrous oxide emissions in grazed dairy pasture.


Dairy cow urine deposits the equivalent of 800-1000kg N/ha in each urine patch. Eco-N holds the nitrogen N that is normally leached or emitted, in the root zone so the plant can use it. It does this by slowing the activity of the nitrifying bacteria in the soil that convert ammoniun to nitrate. This boosts the N supply to pasture for plant growth during the growing season.

This was explained at the International Farm Management Conference held in NZ.

Eco-N is a Ravensdown product that could very very exciting & a huge break thru for the environmental management by pasture based dairy farmers. There are no incentives for reducing nitrate leaching or nitrous oxide emissions other than knowing you have contributed positively to the environment. So in the short term the usage will depend on whether the nitrogen savings (caused by the use of Eco-N) are more valuable (give an economic return to the dairy farmer)as measured by the additional pasture grown. The current cost in NZ of Eco-N is approx $170/ha/yr.

Work needs to be done urgently in the UK & France to see if we can get an economic return by using Eco-N & be credited with the environmental savings. Eco-N will need to be licensed for use in the EU. At the Lincoln University Dairy Farm 60 lysimeters (encased columnns of soil the same as exist in the paddock) have been placed on the farm to measure ground water nutrients. Further lysimeters have been set up at the University to see whats happening under clover pastures. Eco-N is applied before the major drainage off the farm soils...in most areas before winter. A second application is done pre spring rains. This also indicates that it is either Urine or applied N fertilizers that are applied during the autumn which might create the worst nitrate leaching problems. "Eco-N has the potential to be a valuable nitrogen management tool, together with best management practices, to support environmentally sustainable production of grazed pasture systems."

On farm conditions remain very dry over most of the UK. Grazing conditions are ideal with very good quality pasture for milkers & young stock. Pasture growth rates have accelerated since last week. Magic Day is not too far away.

The very dry soils are a concern as we edge closer to summer without substantial rain. Dry summer planning eg Planting Chicory or Plantain & Clover leys, needs to start now.

Better Communication = Better InCalf Rates

I've just seen a simple idea to improve communication between staff on a pasture based spring calving dairyfarm in Dorset, UK. This came to light at the "Realfarmer" discussion group.....a group for Herdsmen & Herd Managers/farm staff on pasture based dairy farms. "Tail Tape Id".... yes that's right "Tail Tape Id!" "Tail Tape Id" is hardly a new idea....often used to identify cows with mastitis or different calving batches pre drying off in many pasture based herds.


However Gary & Will in Dorset are now using it to identify non cycling cows in the herd in the pre-mating month before AI starts.

Every cow has an orange tape wrapped around it's tail(this week one month pre AI). If there have already been Vet treatments a different colour is applied too.

If any staff member thinks the cow should be rechecked (for whatever reason) she gets another tail tape.

Once the cow has been seen in heat the Tail Tapes are removed.

Gary & Will have a very good track record with a very compact calving block.


It's a team effort & it's important every one in the team is up to speed.....with every cow, every day.....even though there are more than 300 cows in the herd. It can be done but you have to be smart!

It also concerns me that it's hard to observe the correct 'Cow Number' on many farms. The freeze branding on many cows & on many farms is very poor. How do you pick the right cow if the Cow Number is impossible to read?????

At the very least the numbers need to be clipped now. However I think alot of freeze branding needs to seriously improve!!


Below you will see three cows with the "Tail Tape Id".....the cow on the left has already been identified as requiring another vet check (what is her number??? not easy to read is it!). The 2 heifers have very clear easy to read numbers.

Identifying non cycling cows is seriously important in a block calving system & it needs to be done early. The evidence is that the earlier problem cows are identified the better & the more likely that they will remain in the 8-10 week calving block. "Cows with a history" are already known that is cows that had problems at or about calving....twins, milk fever, difficult calvings etc.
Heifer rearing is part of this story too. Dr John Moran (Victoria Australia) said increasing liveweight at first calving would improve milk production and fertility.

The quicker problem cows are identified & treated by a Vet the better.


Cow Body Condition Score (BCS)both at calving & pre mating are very important. You need to minimise the Condition Score loss post calving. Early work by Dr.Jock MacMillan in NZ (with Discussion Group farmers) in the early 1980s clearly linked BCS to fertility. So too did work shortly after at Ellinbank in Victoria, Australia.

It will take 8 days longer for a cow at a BCS of 4( NZ Scoring system) to cycle compared to a cow at a BCS of 5.

Pregnancy rate at 1st insemination for cows with a BCS of 5 will be 1-2% higher than those calving at a BCS of 4.

Empty rates are generally greater in cows that are thin in early lactation (2% for each BCS unit) data from DairyNZ .
However, as herds get bigger it's rapidly becoming a staff management issue as to whether cows get in calf or not, within the targetted block. Do staff fully understand the game plan & their role. Can everyone including relief staff pick cows in heat? Now that the peak calving period is over....the first issue is to offer tired & fatigued staff time off to fully be at their best pre-mating & AI.
Maybe using "Tail Tape Id" might help your pre-mating management & communication between staff.

Square Barrel Liners....should we be using them?

On our recent visit to New Zealand we noticed a high proportion of the dairy farms we visited were using the Skellerup "Square Barrel Liners"(SBL). http://www.2500change.co.nz/SquareLiners.aspx Farmers told us that there was less cup slip & better teat end health. Many told us that BMCCs had fallen especially with heifers. The OAD milking herds seemed to have moved to the SBL too. http://www.skellerup.co.nz/catalogue/dairy-nz/milking-liners




Skellerup the main supplier of liners in NZ say that the SBLs are now the biggest selling milking liner in NZ. Milfos International Ltd another NZ Milking supply company are about to produce their own SBL. http://www.milfos.com/

Jamie Mikkelson from Milfos told me that their inhouse trials showed lower teat irritation, cleaner milking, cleaner take off with ACRs & lower SCC. Very encouraging.


Square Barrel Liners are not new, they have been tried in the USA & other countries. A paper by Ynte et al from Cornell University reported less hyperkeratosis (roughness) on the teats & differences in yield & milkflow. Note this was with the SBL made in the USA (which is not the same as the NZ liner).

In Germany they have compared the traditional round liner with triangular liners(Not SBL). Hartmut Grimm wrote to me....

The first question should be: are any reliable results from any experiments available? In Germany we got some results about three shaped liners: stripping yield was higher with three shaped liners (600g versus 400g) and MOT was longer (490s versus 386s). Data are available only from DeLaval experiments. Another result (Vet. Doctor thesis Hannover/Germany) showed no differences between triangular and standard liners: ""liner shape did not affect significantly the milking and teat condition parameters of a reference group of quarters secreting normally throughout the entire trial. With triangular liners, another attempt was made to improve the technical milking conditions for cows. Yet and in comparison to conventional liners, milking pattern, teat skin condition and udder health were neither improved nor deteriorated by using triangular liners. The results of this study show however that special attention must be paid on correct handling and regular replacement of liners."" Rudovsky(2009) and Mein and Reineman (2009) found worse teat conditions with 3-shaped liners.

Mel Eden a highly respected NZ Milking Adviser said.....

"They slip less than other similar liners - presumably because the mouthpiece cavity vacuum is higher because of the narrow [permanent] pathway for air/vacuum to pass down to the claw from the mouthpiece. They milk out well, have a shallow mouthpiece cavity and a relatively soft mouthpiece that should collapse down during milking to reduce the swelling of the teat into the mouthpiece. This sounds as I am in high praise! They do work well but there are other liners that do a good job too so, when in doubt, we suggest trying them side by side with the farmer's current liner looking for clean, reasonably fast milkout with teats that look as if they have been massaged. [Red or blue teats showing poor massage]. The other 'fault' with liners, slip can be compared liner to liner by pulling down on the [front] teats - holding the claw securely with the other hand - about 10 seconds after cluster application."


Mel would advise different liners on the Front Teats (if there is Cup Slip)

"If farmers are having slipping problems they are definitely worth trying. And yes because front teats are generally narrower than hind teats, liners are more likely to slip. The Vacupulse liner could well solve the problem although other liners could do the same. And there could be other reasons for the slip. We continue to recommend a liner to solve a problem and often they would be different front and back. Not many people recommend the same as they think farmers would find the liners designated for 'front' or 'back' far too confusing. Naturally I disagree. If there is a slip problem and the hind quarters appear to getting milked out cleanly and quickly, I would definitely concentrate only on the front teats"

Which Milking Cup shells are suitable for use with SBLs.


Darold Klindworth from the Australian Milking Research Unit "Cow Time" said there is a real problem getting good research data on Milking Liners "Bottom line the only ones testing them are the guys selling them."


Much of the original Milking Liner Research has been done by Dr Graeme Mein.

The recommendation to change liners every 2500 milkings came from work Graeme did both in Australia & the USA. This is seriously important if you want a low BMCC & low incidence of Mastitis.


Getting research data on Milking Liners today is near impossible. This is a problem as there are alot of different liners on the market.....how are farmers to tell??????

Worse still how do farmers actually make a good decision about which Milking Liners to use.

Very good Question but who has the answer?????

On our visit to NZ farmers were keen to recommend the Skellerup NZ Square Barrel Liners. Mel Eden's suggestion of different liners front & back may help people who are having problems with cup slip. Organic farmers may find this a part solution to BMCCs.

Beautiful Grazing Conditions But Regrowth Very Slow

The current grazing conditions on most UK dairy farms is ideal for early spring....the pasture quality is high & the soil is dry & firm. Pasture dry matters are high (approx 25%DM) & the utilization is very high.

Most pasture based dairy farmers have again successfully used the very simple spreadsheet known as the Spring Grazing Planner which is used internationally to plan spring grazing. It doesnt seem to matter if you are in Victoria Australia , New Zealand or Great Britain....it works brilliantly! Nor does it matter if you are a Spring block calver or an Autumn calver....it works well.
The issue in the UK right now is that the pasture growth is very slow over most of the country. Probably because of dryness & the lack of sunshine. Growth in some of the southern counties is 20kgs/DM/ha/day or better but this isnt happening further north.
As a consequence average pasture covers are low or falling quicker than the feed budgets were expecting & the opening covers for the start of round two dont look good. So what to do?

More Nitrogen is NOT the answer as there is not enough moisture & the soils are still cold. As the soils are dry the rotation length can be cut without damaging either soils or pasture. To do this extra feed is going to be needed. In other words deliberately employ pasture substitution to slow the cows grazing rotation.
Silage added to the cows diet will have greater impact on the amount of pasture substitution than say extra grain fed. The pasture growth rates are well below demand so slow the rotation! Extra feed is going to be required.....do you have enough silage or are you going to be buying feed.....make up your mind & act quickly.
Discussion group members from thru out the UK have reported fields with very poor growth...some of these may have been damaged by frost.....some maybe short of nutrients....what ever the reason I think these need to be grazed now. Even if they are shorter in length/pasture cover(many of these non growing pastures were last grazed in November). The grazing will help to stimulate regrowth.

Look at your Grass wedge information & perhaps replan your grazing based not on covers but on the question..."Are the pastures growing fast enough?"
BEWARE RECIPE FARMING.....This is NOT the time to be following RECIPES (eg 30% rules of thumb). These recipes are dangerous & should NOT be used.....for goodness sake you need to be working from first principles & using your up to date pasture measurements to make the decisions.
I cant over emphasise how important the grazing residual is to quality later in the spring. The current dry conditions are ideal for cleaning the pastures right out.....but this in turn might be slowing recovery!
Now is the time to start measuring pastures again. If you are confident of pasture regrowth rates I'd stick to the Spring Grazing Planner.

What is a GB Olympic Oarsman doing Sharemilking in New Zealand?

Richard & Louise Hamilton are highly successful sharemilkers in the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand. However Richard was in the 1996 Great Britain Rowing team at the Atlanta Olympics.

So why is this English Olympian milking cows in New Zealand?...did he ever imagine he would be milking cows in NZ?....after the Beijing Olympics Richard & Louise moved out to NZ. Initially he was a rowing coach at nearby Tauranga but discovered an opportunity to go dairying in the Bay of Plenty.
Richard & Louise make a great team as they have both strived to succeed.
Sharemilking in the NZ dairy industry provides opportunities for young people to establish their own businesses & to gain equity. Opportunities abound for the adventurous & those with determination.

Richard & Louise have two sharemilking jobs at Pongakawa, one 50:50 & a second job which is a "Lower order Sharemilking" job. (both for the same land owner & across the road from each other....just perfect!)
Here he explains to our group the financial returns from both types of sharemilking contracts he & Louise have at Pongakawa. The Lower Order sharemilking jobs do not involve much investment or capital costs by the sharemilkers but do provide an opportunity to get a foot into the industry & an opportunity to save cash from earnings. The herd must be purchased to be a 50:50 sharemilker....the income & cost sharing reflect the different share %.
The next step for Richard & Louise maybe an equity partnership.

Colin & Hazel Grainger-Allen moved to NZ from the SW of England (once members of both Ankle deep & GrassRoots DGs). They are also making tremendous progress up the equity ladder as 50:50 sharemilkers in the Rotorua area....Waikiti Valley. Today they are members of the "Green to Gold" dairy discussion group. Thornbury Farms now milks 500 XBred cows on 160ha thru a 44 aside Herringbone parlour. Colin & Hazel are paying off debt as fast as they can but continuing to build cow numbers to build equity & savings."Our goal is farm ownership & we want our money to work for us NOT us work for money"
This farming district can be very tough, its not the easiest dairy country....it was very dry when we visited..... some of the land is steep....very steep by UK standards. Colin & Hazel use this block for summer milking heifers on OAD milking & then outwinter the herd on direct drilled forage crops. Fertilizer is flown on from the farm's airstrip high up at the back of the farm.
The NZ sharemilking system allows young people to enter the dairy industry sometimes with very little experience but to then progress by gaining equity. This is hard work but also requires intensive management of the farm business cashflow.

The world is a very unstable place right now.....care needs to be taken to closely manage cashflows. Sure milk prices are lifting but costs are going up even faster. In some countries there is a credit crisis that will "crash & burn dairy farmers" who dont control cashflows. Everyone needs to be very aware of the global credit risks.
Those NZ sharemilkers/farmers who can demonstrate cashflow control & savings will progress rapidly despite the global risks.
The saying goes that "If you want to fly with the Eagles then don't mess around with the Turkeys". It's important to seek out the "Eagles" & look at how they farm so successfully.

Hard to believe but Soil Liguefies in NZ Earthquake


I'm sure everyone (especially those who have visited NZ) feel for those people in Christchurch who suffered the devastating earthquake on the 22nd Feb 2011. We are all concerned for those people who lost family members & those who are injured & suffered massive damage to their houses & farms. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darfield_earthquake

I've just returned from NZ & we (a Breton Discussion Group from France ) stayed in the centre of Christchurch for a week. To see the destruction in the CBD is frightening & very sad. Outsiders will be unaware that since the Sept earthquake there have been more than 4000 after shocks. Nerves are strained as everyone is not sure whats happening next. Very scarey!
Our group was hosted by staff of Ravensdown, Cropmark, Lincoln University, Farmwise, Consulting Officers & numerous very generous dairy farmers.....we sincerely hope that you & your families & friends are all safe.
The damage to city buildings is obvious in most TV & YouTube clips.

What is not so obvious is whats happening to the soil. This is of huge importance to farmers & to every householder.
While visiting Darfield we were shown the extensive damage caused by the Sept 4th earthquake where there was sideway movement of soil by up to 4metres & upward lift of 1.5metres in places.....earthquakes are violent & have massive forces. See the photos at the top of the blog showing the massive sideway movement of soil/road & irrigation channels.
What is very scarey in big earthquakes is that the soil turns to liquid. The forces are so great that ground water & soil are mixed & pushed to the surface often causing flooding. The concept that soil could be liquefied will sound almost unbelievable to most farmers. Christchurch is built on an alluvial plain over a soft sedimentary bed so it is prone to liquefaction. It is liquefaction that probably explains why so many buildings have been destroyed despite the very tough building code aimed at earthquake protection. After the water drains away there are tonnes of structureless sand or silt left on the surface. These videos show the liquefaction of soil in Christchurch within minutes or hours of the earthquake.

Richard Christie from Ravensdown has sent me two photos of soil liquefaction that occured in central Christchurch within 2 hours of the big shake this week.The first shows the Avon River (normally only say 30cm deep with clear water) now in flood with liquified soil. The second is of the liquified soil being forced up thru new cracks in Tuam street outside the Ravensdown building in central Christchurch.

Everyone expects many aftershocks.....we sincerely hope this is the last big earthquake Christchurch & Canterbury suffers. To our Canterbury friends, fellow dairyfarmers & Agricultural support industry we are thinking of you!

"I Dream of Mountains..." & Amazing Pastures

Meet Charles & Jan Whitehead who farm below Mt Hutt, Methven in Canterbury NZ. They milk over 800 NZ XBred cows in two herds on a beautiful farm with stunning views of the Southern Alps & the ski field at Mt Hutt.The Whiteheads & some local Discussion Group members hosted the French Group from Brittany.
"I Dream of Mountains...." was part of Andre's thank you speech after we had completed our farm visit. In part it referred to the beautiful mountain background at Mt Hutt but it was also a "Martin Luther King" like speech that referred to the pinnacle of pasture management we had just seen on a very simple but effective grass based system. Our group was very impressed with Charles & Jan's farm & the simple grass based system that created the best pastures we saw thru out NZ. In NZ the nitrogen use has increased with milk price & one of the consequences is less visable clover on most pastures grazed by dairy cows. Its not the only reason for clovers demise as clover weevil has had a major impact in the North Island. At lincoln University dairy farm the clover has disappeared almost completely.

Charles is renovating pastures on a 10 yr cycle partly because of grass grub damage. He has used both a ryegrass/clover mix and a fescue/clover mix. Both looked to be very good with a strong presence of clover (Charles uses 200kg N/ha per year. Excellent quality pasture grazed hard with a relatively high stocking rate resulting in a very good pasture on the next round. A simple but effective use of the pasture wedge graph. The fescue was planted at 25kg/ha plus 6kgs clovers (both small leaf & medium leaf). He explained to the group that the fescue needed to be on a quicker rotation to maintain quality.

His usual pre grazing target was 3100kg DM/ha with a target residual of 1500..
The pre grazing pasture quality was exceptional & Odille those boots are "Sweet as".
